Saline Breast Implants
As the name suggests, saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. Saline is a term for saltwater. These implants are filled after they are placed in the body, so they require a smaller incision than silicone. One benefit of a saline breast implant is that if the implant shell leaks, the body will naturally absorb and expel the saline water. Also, saline implants are less expensive than their silicone counterparts.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone implants tend to be preferred by both patients and surgeons. Some people are wary of silicone implants because they remember in the 1990s when silicone implants were recalled. However, those types of implants are no longer available. In 2006, the FDA approved silicone breast implants for women over 22 years old. The newer categories of silicone implants have gone through extensive testing and research to ensure safety.
Silicone implants have a soft gel feel that is similar to natural breast tissue. They have a lower rate of developing ripples and wrinkles, making them less visible.
In the case of leakage, the gel may remain in the shell entirely, or move into the implant pocket. However, unlike the saline breast implants, a leaking silicone breast implant will not collapse.
Silicone is a lighter-weight material than saline, so they also have a lesser chance of migrating due to gravity. Eventually, gravity takes affect, and the lighter implants may be better for women that are already experiencing slight drooping before breast augmentation.
