What is Top Surgery?
Top surgery is the reconstructive surgery performed to alter the chest size, shape, and appearance. This surgery is typically performed by a plastic surgeon that has specific training in transgender or gender-affirming surgeries. More recently, it’s also been referred to as transgender mastectomy, masculinizing chest reconstruction, chest re-sculpting, or simply the catchall “top surgery.”
Regardless of your gender, you can have the silhouette you’ve dreamed.
How Much Does Top Surgery cost?
Every patient has unique blepharoplasty needs. As a result, your costs, which will be discussed during your consultation, will vary from patient to patient. We accept all forms of payment, including credit cards and checks, and also offer convenient financing options.
Who is a Candidate for Top Surgery?
For most trans and nonbinary persons, Gender dysphoria is a medical term for dissatisfaction with life because the sex a person was assigned at birth does not match their gender. This causes a person a great deal of mental and emotional distress.
How is gender dysphoria treated?
There’s no one perfect course of treatment – it all depends on the individual. You may decide to medically transition through hormones, “top” surgery, and/or “bottom” surgery.
What is the Procedure for Top Surgery?
There are several different techniques for performing top surgery. They vary to where the incisions are made, whether the nipple and areola are reduced and/or repositioned, and how much sensation is preserved.
Periareolar Surgery: The incision is located around the nipple and areola, and then another incision in a concentric circle a couple of inches away from the nipple. The skin between the incisions is removed. Dr. Dawli can then access your glandular tissue from that small open area. The areola is reduced by reconnecting skin to the areola using the purse string method. The nipple stalk is left intact and the nipple sensation is preserved. Typically, those who are small to-moderately sized chested and those with good elasticity are good candidates
Double Incision Surgery: This technique creates horizontal incisions at the top and bottom of the pectoral muscle to allow for tissue removal. The nipple stalk and nerves must be severed so that the nipple and areola can be repositioned and grafted into place, resulting in loss of erotic sensation but will maintain touch sensation. Typically, those who are larger-chested individuals or people with moderately-sized chests with less elasticity usually require a double incision.
The decision to have top surgery is extremely personal. You will have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and any risks and potential complications.
